12-14th April: Leadership Camp 2013
posted: 6:35 PM | comments: 0

Here is a long overdue blog post on my school's Leadership Camp 2013! Initially, I was going to blog about this during the holidays but due to lots and lots of procrastination, it is only up today haha. I tried my best to recall what I did during the camp with the help of Suet Ling and Woo's blog posts, so forgive me if I missed out on anything.

This year's camp was held in Shah Alam Extreme Park in Shah Alam of course. It is an open area completely built with many facilities plus an air-conditioned hall (!!!). I was more impressed with the toilets because they were equipped with water heaters (but there was no hot water) and most importantly they were clean! There were even fast food restaurants (KFC, Pizza Hut & Burger King) right opposite our camping site can you imagine how happy we were when the bus passed by them. But too bad (and obviously) the facilitators didn't allow us to go to the restaurants due to safety precautions.

I was quite satisfied with the campsite until I found out that we had to sleep in tents (okay lies I knew we were going to sleep in tents before arriving the campsite). Things became worse when the facilitators separated my friends and I into different tents with different tent mates (and they were mostly juniors). With amazing sneaky switching skills with the juniors, Suet Ling, Woo and I managed to share the same tent. ^_^ Our tent was smaller than the others because there were only three of us while others had about 4-5 people sharing the same tent.

The tent Suet Ling, Woo and I shared.

DAY 1

The camp started off with an ice-breaking session where we were asked to gather in a circle. There were two games altogether- one was called the 'Round the Clock' and the other was a 'Rock-paper-scissors' concept game. I am too lazy to explain about the games, so all you need to know is that us seniors won the game!

We were then split into groups and told that we had to come up with a group name and a group cheer. I suggested the name Sexy Carrots (yes I stole the name from Pre-Mad Camp and I copied their cheer as well hehe sorry). Cant deny that our cheer was one of the best (though we shouldn't have added the word 'so cheap'), so thank you Ken for your idea haha.

After tea break, we gathered again to play Battlefield. The objective of the game was to get your group member whom is blindfolded to the other side of the circle without touching any of the obstacles within the circle. In order to direct your blindfolded member, you have to make sounds indicating the directions he/she is supposed to go. We did pretty well mostly because we could actually look at the ground when we were blindfolded HEHEcheatersHEHE..

At night, we gathered at the hall (we got to experience the air-conditioner hehe) and were handed out files. The facilitator told to write down our strengths, weaknesses etc on a piece of paper. It was easier to list down my weaknesses compared to my strengths 'cause you know, we teenagers particularly tend to have low self-esteem. With the help of my friends, I listed out my strengths which I was quite surprised when they mentioned them. It is nice to know what your friends think about you at times especially when it comes to compliments.

Highlight of the night was the 'Touch and Speak' activity. In a group, we had to enter the hall silently, touch the puzzles containing alphabets and numbers in an alphanumeric order using our left hand and say them out loud then leave the hall without a word BUT we knew none of this during the game. Every group had to brainstorm, discuss among each other and try their luck each time. We were so frustrated each time we failed but we were even MORE frustrated when the group we secretly co-operated with managed to figure it out before us. We were just one step closer to winning but.. sigh. :(

Little did we know that it was already 11pm by then (we started the activity from 8-ish I think), so we were told to wash up and to get a proper rest. Since it was an open park, there were strangers skateboarding from the moment we entered the tent till the moment we woke up. Please tell me WHO skates in the middle of the night. -_- The juniors made it worse by staying up to talk with their friends all night. Please don't get me wrong, I am not against the juniors for talking with friends at night in fact I think it's alright since it is a camp. I am just not happy with them for not controlling the volume of their voices which interrupted the others who wanted to sleep.

To be honest, I was more annoyed with the skateboarders than the juniors but the worst part was still the fact that I had sleep with the insects. Have I mentioned how afraid I am of insects? T.T We spotted a tiny frog in our tent and many tiny bugs flying in our tent. Imagine the horror I had please. T.T

On a side note, I didn't take much pictures on the first day because our schedule was packed with activities. Cannot believe I had no time to take pictures of myself too aiyo hahaha.

DAY 2

Woke up early and did some exercises before getting reading for the exciting activities ahead of us! Together with our groups, we got to experience flying fox, abseiling, rock climbing and archery(!!!). It was my first time trying out flying fox and abseiling, so I was feeling really excited for these both. But being the coward I am, I screamed all the way down the flying fox hahaha.

This is where we had the flying fox, abseiling and rock climbing activities.

After lunch we had paintball (!!!) (!!!) (!!!) hehe. As much as I was excited for paintball, I was also feeling very scared at the same time. I am very afraid of pain one leh. T.T Hence, I was protecting myself behind things throughout the game and contributed pretty much nothing for my group #badgroupmember #horriblesenior. There was this junior (F1 girl) from my team who was so brave that she was still willing to play even after getting shot several times. *hidesface* Lucky me, I only got shot in the mask once and it wasn't painful. While everyone else got hurt due to the paintball activity, I got hurt when I was playing archery lol 'cause I held the bow in the wrong position. If I were to ever go for another paintball session in the near future, I must be more daring in the battlefield!

Did anyone notice Wee flexing his biceps behind Shas? FUHH.

Asian eyes hahaha.

Suhaasan and Woo with a very grumpy Suet Ling.

In the evening, we did the antenna activity where we had to build the tallest and the most stable antenna using just pipes and strings. Then the facilitators stopped each group and said that all of us had to work together to build the antenna taller than the rock climbing wall. ._. It was a hassle in the beginning as there were too many people giving out instructions but eventually we managed to work together after tons of screaming and shouting.

After dinner, we were instructed to draw out our experiences so far on a piece of mahjong paper using our creativity. Each group had to present their pieces one by one and Xin Yue did it for our group. I remembered being so sleepy and exhausted that I all wanted to go was to crawl back to the tent and snooze away. I had to constantly keep myself awake to avoid being noticed by the facilitator for falling asleep. /.\

I thought the day had came to an end until the facilitator gave us another task. Each group had to come up with a dance within 3 minutes, YES THREE MINUTES along with a mashup song he chose. Initially the whole group was a little reluctant to dance but after a while, we started to get pumped for the performance! We came up with crazy ideas and dance movements- yep we were prepared to be embarrassed on our last school camp 'cause YOLO.

But then not every group was prepared for the performances. The first group who went out did pretty badly as the members of the group weren't sporting. Most of them just stood there with sulky looks while watching one or two of their members perform. ._. The facilitator got mad and called the performance off. Damn we were so prepared to go all out for the performance.

The second night was much more peaceful than the first night as the juniors got warned by the teachers + facilitators and the skateboarders decided to take a night off I guess lol. That night, we decided to unzip the outer layer of the tent (which functions to keep the tent dry if it rains) because the weather was like 90 degrees outside. Luck wasn't on our side- it started to rain. I remembered feeling water droplets sprinkled towards my direction and waking up to Shas throwing shoes into our tent. Suet Ling and Woo woke me up to help them but I was so tired and exhausted that I immediately fell back asleep. Sorry guys. ._.

Also bumped into Bryan and Darryl in the middle of the night when I was walking to the toilet. They said I looked as if I had not slept for 10 years.

Yep, that is how tired I was.

DAY 3

I remembered being the last  to wake up that morning among us three heh. Chilled and chatted with the seniors after washing up. Then, we had an amazing race concept activity which involved searching for check-points, orienting (this activity pulled us down horribly), eating bitter gourds, making shapes out of wooden planks, carrying buckets of water, bouncing a tennis ball and balancing nails (the facilitator gave us the answer actually). Each group was further divided into smaller groups and mine came in last. ._.

We gathered in the air-conditioned hall again for the last time to say goodbye. Packed our bags and left for home.

This year's camp was something different compared to the previous years and it was fun! The activities were exciting, the place was considered hygienic and also spent quality time with the besties plus some of the juniors. Met so many unfamiliar faces from the afternoon session as well. This is a camp I would want to remember. :)
